… Is contrast-polarity selectivity a general property of visual spatial aftereffects? The present
paper reports two experiments designed to test this proposition in relation to the tilt
aftereffect (TAE) (Gibson 1937; Gibson and Radner 1937). In the first experiment adapting
and test stimuli were black and white bars, in the second experiment they were luminance
edges of the same or opposite polarity. The dependence of the TAE on the relative contrasts
of the adapting and …
The tilt aftereffect (TAE) was studied with adapting and test stimuli consisting of black or white bars (experiment 1), and of luminance edges (experiment 2). Both experiments failed to demonstrate selectivity of the TAE to the polarity of luminance contrast.
